How to reduce a photo’s file size
Quick answer
Most photos are far bigger than they need to be. Resize to the size you actually need, then compress, and a 5 MB phone photo usually drops below 1 MB with no visible change.
Compress imageFree, no sign-up, and your files never leave your device.
Open the toolStep by step
- Decide where the photo is going (see the tips below for sizes that work).
- Open Compress image and add the photos. You can add up to 50 at once.
- Set “Also shrink large images” to the size you need, such as Longest side 2048 px, and keep the quality at 75.
- Select Compress and download. The result shows how much smaller each photo got.
Tips
- For email, a website or social media, about 2,048 pixels on the longest side is plenty.
- For printing, keep the full size; compress gently or not at all.
- Email services usually cap attachments at about 20 to 25 MB in total.
- Screenshots and graphics with flat colours stay sharper as PNG; photos are smaller as JPG or WEBP.
If something goes wrong
The file barely got smaller.
It was probably already compressed. Resizing to fewer pixels is what makes the big difference.
The photo looks blotchy.
The compression is too strong. Try again with Light compression (85).
