Step-by-step guide: How to reduce a photo’s file size
Step by step, and if something goes wrong
Steps
- Add one or more images.
- Choose an output format and compression level.
- Select Compress and compare the sizes before downloading.
If something goes wrong
- If a result is larger than the original, the original was already well compressed. Keep the original.
- Shrinking very large photos to 2048 px usually saves the most space with little visible change on screens.
- HEIC photos (from iPhones) are supported. Outside Safari, a HEIC decoder loads the first time you add one.
- Very large images (over 50 megapixels) are rejected to keep your browser responsive.
- Output never contains the original’s hidden metadata (such as GPS location), because the image is redrawn from its pixels.
