- Savings come mostly from photos and scans. PDFs that are mainly text may not get much smaller.
- Images are saved as JPEG, so see-through areas in images are kept but very fine detail may soften.

Step-by-step guide: How to make a PDF smaller for email
Step by step, and if something goes wrong
Steps
- Add a PDF.
- Choose how much to compress: Strongest for email, Balanced for most uses, Light for printing.
- Select Compress PDF and download the smaller copy. The size before and after is shown.
If something goes wrong
- PDFs made from scans or photos shrink the most. Text-only PDFs are usually small already.
- Text, fonts and drawings are not changed, so they stay sharp at any level.
- If the result isn’t small enough, try Strongest, or split the PDF into parts with Split PDF.
- Password-protected PDFs can’t be opened directly. If you know the password, remove it first with Unlock PDF.
- If a PDF is reported as damaged, try opening it and saving a fresh copy with your PDF reader.
- Scripts, embedded attachments and automatic actions are removed from the output for safety. Links to websites are kept.
