How to check a CAD export before 3D printing

Updated 4 min read

Quick answer

Export a mesh (STL, OBJ or GLB) from your CAD software, then open it in 3D model information. It shows the size, surface area and volume, and whether the model is watertight, which printers need.

3D model informationFree, no sign-up, and your files never leave your device.

Open the tool

Step by step

  1. In your CAD software, export the part as a mesh: STL for printing, or GLB if it will be shown online.
  2. Open 3D model information and add the file. Several parts can be checked at once.
  3. Check the size matches your design. STL has no units, so a 40 mm part shows as 40.
  4. Check Watertight says Yes. If it shows open edges, fix the holes in your CAD software and export again.
  5. Use the volume to estimate material. Multiply by your material’s density for the weight.

Tips

  • Exporting at a finer resolution gives smoother curves but bigger files. The triangle count shows how detailed the export is.
  • For client reviews, convert to GLB (web) or USDZ (iPhone AR). Choose Stand upright and Millimetres to metres.
  • Designs are opened on your own computer and never uploaded, so unreleased parts stay confidential.

If something goes wrong

The size is 1,000 times too big or too small.

The export used different units. Check your CAD export settings, or use the Size option when converting.

Can it open STEP or IGES files?

Not yet; it’s on our list. Export an STL, OBJ or GLB from your CAD software for now.
