How to remove location data from photos

Updated 3 min read

Quick answer

Phone photos usually store where they were taken, accurate to a few metres. Strip it with a metadata remover before posting or sending, especially photos taken at home.

Remove photo metadataFree, no sign-up, and your files never leave your device.

Open the tool

Step by step

  1. Open Remove photo metadata and add the photos.
  2. Select Remove metadata and download the clean copies.
  3. Share the clean copies, not the originals.

What else is hidden in a photo

Besides location, photos usually record the date and time, the phone or camera model, and settings such as exposure. Removing metadata clears all of this, not just location.

Tips

  • Check what a photo carries first with Image information.
  • On iPhone, when sharing, tap Options at the top of the share sheet and turn off Location.
  • Many social networks remove location when you post, but direct messages, email and file sharing often keep it.

If something goes wrong

Will the photo look different?

No. Only the hidden information is removed. The picture is saved again at high quality.
